POINTS PER ROUND

Effective January 1, 2007, the Utah Tennis Association will be switching from the STAR Ranking System to the Points Per Round Ranking System for all Standings and Rankings. Points Per Round (PPR) is designed to encourage our players to compete often, puts the emphasis on advancing through the draw and allows players to calculate their own rankings.

All results from the last 12 months will count towards points starting on January 1, 2007. Thus, all results from 2006 will be taken into consideration. The Standings Lists will be based on a rolling 12 month calendar. Utah District Tournament Directors will begin to use the new Points Per Round Standings Lists for tournament seeding in January 2007.

This system will closely reflect National’s Points Per Round Ranking System. The Utah District will only use the top 6 results from USTA/Utah Sanctioned Tournaments towards your Standings and Rankings. You must accumulate 1 point to appear on the Standings List. If a tournament is not among a player’s best 6 tournaments, the Points Per Round will not count toward the player’s standings.

UTAH DISTRICT YEAR-END RANKING – 2007
Each player’s annual year-end ranking will be based on the accumulation of points for winning rounds (PPR) at Utah District Sanctioned Tournaments during the calendar year. A player must accumulate at least 300 ranking points during the calendar year in order to earn a year-end ranking, in addition to the following:

Adults – must compete in one of 4 designated tournaments:

1. Techna-Glass Adult Icebreaker
2. Ivory Homes Adult Tournament of Champions
3. Adult Utah State Open Tennis Championships, or
4. The Point After Adult Indoor Tennis Championships.

Juniors – must compete in a minimum of 4 Utah District Sanctioned Open Level Tournaments in the same age division to be considered for ranking. Ranking is based upon local Utah Tennis Sanctioned Tournaments only and does not include locally held ITA Circuit or Sectional Championships. The junior ranking year runs from Jan 1, to Dec 31, 2007. Please note that Challenger Division Tournaments do not count towards Standings or Ranking Lists. A junior may be ranked in more than one age division, if they meet all of the requirements in each age division. If a tournament is not among a player’s best 6 tournaments, the Points Per Round will not count toward the player’s ranking.

Specifics of the Utah Points Per Round Ranking System Include:

• A player must win a round to receive any points for the tournament.  Byes do not qualify as wins.
• Withdrawals and walkovers qualify as wins for the advancing player and earn Points Per Round.
• Retirements qualify as wins for the advancing player and earn Points Per Round.
• A player who advances because of a default that takes place before the commencement of the first point in the match or because the opponent is disqualified shall receive Points Per Round for advancing.
• A player who is defaulted from a tournament for code violations under the Point Penalty System or misconduct forfeits any points accumulated during the tournament.
• The final rankings for a junior age division shall include all players who have been age eligible for play in the division at any time during the year, met the ranking requirements for that age, who have accumulated at least 300 points in the division, and have competed in at least 4 Utah Sanctioned Tournaments in that division. Players may be ranked in more than one age division if they have been age eligible in more than one division during the year, and have met the requirements for that ranking. Once a player ages out of a division, they can no longer earn points towards their lower age division.
• Adults are eligible to be ranked in more than one division if they have met the ranking requirements for each division; accumulated at least 300 points in the division and have competed in one of the 4 designated tournaments mentioned above. It is important to remember that rankings are not an assessment of your skill as a player, but an assessment of your record and results in Sanctioned Tournament play.
• Tiebreak Rules for Utah Rankings and Standings Lists will be determined as follows:
          • A player whose best event has the highest number of points, second best, third best, etc. through six events.
          • Best random drawn number.

Finding Your Record Online:
To find your player record online, go to
www.utahtennis.com and click on Tournaments. Click on TennisLink REGISTRATION at the bottom of the page. Then click on Ranking Home – the link will be on the right hand side of the page. Click on the posting for viewing “Intermountain – Utah Standings Lists and Rankings”. Select your division to view the appropriate list. Click on your name to view your record. If you appear on two separate lists, you must go to each list to review your record for each division. Only Utah District Ranking Tournaments will appear.

The Utah District Competition Committee shall evaluate and recommend annually the appropriate levels of the events considered for the Utah District Ranking and Standing Lists. You can find the level of each tournament by going to www.utahtennis.com and clicking on Tournaments. Then click on Adult Tournament Calendar or Junior Tournament Calendar. The tournament level will be listed by each tournament named.

THE ANSWER TO THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTION:
Why does my player’s record state “Does not count toward total points?”

Only your best 6 events will count towards your Utah District ranking/standings. If you have over 6 tournaments on your record, the ranking program automatically drops out the lower scores, and keeps your best 6 tournament results.

2006
GENERAL JUNIOR RANKING REGULATIONS
Utah District

Rankings shall be based  upon the player's record for the year. Wins, losses, exposure, match value and comparative scores shall all be considered. A ranking represents a good record, preferably long and strong, measured by the quantity of events entered. Records of matches played in one age group or category may not be combined with records of another category.

All rankings are computer generated by STAR (System for Tournament Administration and Ranking).  This is the system endorsed by the USTA.

Utiltizing the STAR ranking program, a tentative computer generated standings list will be published as "Tentative Rankings. Players wishing to appeal their ranking may do so within the designated grace period. The Ranking Committee will review appeals as they are received and make changes as deemed appropriate. Following the grace period and review of appeals received, these rankings will be considered final.

*Please Note: The Utah District will implement a new PPR (Points Per Round) Ranking System starting in 2007. Currently the Utah District uses the STAR ranking program that looks at head-to-head matches. Implementation of the Points Per Round system will highlight and premiere the Utah District Junior Tournaments. The further that you go in the tournament, the more points you will earn. Information regarding level of tournament, number of tournaments used for ranking calculations and bonus points will be updated when available.

Only players who are current USTA members shall be considered for ranking.  Any Player meeting the minimum qualifying requirements is eligible for ranking.

SPECIAL JUNIOR RANKING REQUIREMENTS
Ranking is based upon local Utah Tennis sanctioned tournaments only and does not include ITA Circuit or Sectional Championships. The junior ranking year runs from January 1 to December 31.

AGE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
ALL JUNIOR PLAYERS, who compete in USTA sanctioned events, may play an age division until the month in which they age up, or, in other words, until your birthday month. This means that players who are 10, 12, 14, 16 or 18 years old may continue to play in their age division until the month they turn 11,13,15,17 or 19, respectively. For example: a player who turns 15 in October, may continue to play in the 14-and-under-age group up to and through September 30. Starting October 1, this player must move up and play in the 16-and-under age division.

As in the past, you may also elect to play in an age older division before you are required to do so. If you have any questions concerning this rule, please call Utah Tennis - 944-USTA (8782).

2005 JUNIOR RANKING REQUIREMENTS:
A junior may be ranked in two age divisions, if they meet all the requirements for both age divisions. 20 Tournaments, with singles events, were offered in 2005. A junior must play in 4 of 20 USTA/Utah sanctioned tournaments in order to be considered for ranking. In order to be considered for a ranking a junior player must have at least 1 win in tournament participation. All locally sanctioned tournaments are to be considered designated and will be used to rank junior players. Junior players in each age division who meet the 4 tournament and at least 1 win requirement will be considered for ranking.  A ranked junior cannot play in a challenger division.  A year end ranking will not be given to a player that has less than a 50% win/loss record unless they have beaten a ranked player.  PLEASE NOTE: *No rankings will be given for age 10 and under. A list of tournament winners will be published

CHALLENGER DEFINITION:
A challenger player is a junior who is not ranked and has not won an open tournament in his current age division. A junior may continue to participate in a challenger event, in their age appropriate division, until they have won no more than (2) tournaments. After two (2) tournament wins a junior is no longer eligible for a challenger event until they age up. A player may not play out of his/her age division until the month in which the junior ages up.  A list of Challenger Tournament winners will be published.

SPECIAL DOUBLES RANKING REQUIREMENTS
In order to receive a doubles ranking, a team must have played together and meet the requirements listed below. All locally sanctioned tournaments offering doubles events will be considered designated and will be used for ranking doubles teams.

* A team must play together in at least 4 Doubles Tournaments
* A team must have at least 1 win in doubles tournament play

DEFAULTS: PLEASE NOTE IF A PLAYER DEFAULTS OUT OF A TOURNAMENT HE/SHE WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR THAT TOURNAMENT AND WILL NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE 4 TOURNAMENTS NEEDED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A DISTRICT YEAR END RANKING.   IF THE DEFAULT IS FOR ILLNESS, INJURY OR FAMILY EMERGENGY THE PLAYER MUST PROVIDE A WRITTEN NOTICE FROM A PARENT AND/OR A DOCTOR TO THE RANKING COMMITTEE ASKING FOR A WAIVER AND REQUEST THE TOURNAMENT TO BE COUNTED FOR RANKING PURPOSES.  ALL MATCHES PLAYED INCLUDING THE DEFAULT WE BE COUNTED TOWARDS A PLAYERS WIN/LOSS RECORD.
