Tournament Guidelines for Players and Parents
by USTA Intermountain Junior Competition Committee

Pre-Tournament Preparation
 

Player:

  • Pack tennis bag (extra racquet, strings, t-shirt, shoelaces, first-aid items, water jugs etc.)
  • Arrange for proper warm-up on match day
  • Double check with your parents regarding starting time and location of your match

Parent:

  • Verify the time and location of the match
  • Plan to arrive at the match site at least 20 minutes before match is scheduled
  • Make sure your child eats at least one hour before their scheduled match

Tournament Check-In

Player:

  • The Player - NOT the parent checks in when he/she arrives at the tournament desk
  • Once you have checked in, you must be ready to immediately go to your assigned court
  • The Player - is responsible for carrying his/her racquet bag and water jug
  • Stay close to the tournament desk, when your name is called you must be available
  • If the player cannot make it to the tournament, it is his/her obligation to inform the Tournament Director as soon as possible

 Parent:

  • Let your child assume the responsibility for checking in (it is not the parent's responsibility to check the child in)
  • Let your child carry and be responsible for his/her racquet bag and water jug

Playing the Match

Player: 

  • Call the score out before you start each point
  • Have 2 tennis balls ready before you start a point (when serving)
  • Make your line calls quickly and as you see them - BE FAIR AND HONEST
  • Players are allowed to leave the playing area to do the following:

               1.  Utilize the restroom

               2.  Locate an official

               3.  Take a break between the 2nd and 3rd sets


(Should you leave the court to use the restroom or to locate an official, you are NOT allowed to receive any type of coaching from anyone.  Only during the break between the 2nd and 3rd sets are you allowed to receive coaching)

  • If the player feels his/her opponent is making errors with his/her calls, then it is the player's responsibility to get an official.

Parent:

  • Please do not talk to your son/daughter during the match
  • PLEASE DO NOT COACH YOUR SON/DAUGHTER DURING THE MATCH
    (THIS IS AGAINST THE RULES OF TENNIS)
  • Feel free to applaud when either player makes a good shot
  • Please do not applaud when your child's opponent misses a shot
  • Please do not assist your son/daughter with making line calls or helping with a scoring dispute between the two players

After the Match

Player:

  • Shake hands with your opponent
  • Gather up your equipment, put it in your racquet bag, and dispose of your trash
  • Report your results to the tournament desk (winners should return all 3 balls)
  • Check the draw sheet for the time, date and place of your next match.  The Tournament Desk will give you this information so always check with them.

Parent:

  • Praise your child no matter who won or what the score
  • Double check the draw sheet for time, date and place of next match.
