USTA SCHOOL TENNIS

USTA School Tennis Program

Enriching Students Lives Through Tennis
The Utah Tennis Association (UTA), in conjunction with the United States Tennis Association (USTA), is currently implementing the USTA School Tennis Program throughout many school districts in Utah. In-services for elementary, middle, junior high and high school may be scheduled by calling Liz Grayston at the Utah Tennis Association. Physical education teachers are led by USTA trained School Program Clinicians and they will provide the background and expertise for teachers to effectively instruct tennis as a part of their physical education classes. The Utah State Board of Education has endorsed the USA Schools Tennis Program as part of the Physical Education curriculum. In conjunction with Utah Tennis' commitment to helping schools provide students with an introduction to the lifelong benefits of tennis, we would like to invite teachers to participate in a FREE 3-hour Teach In-Service Tennis Training.  When teachers attend an In-Service Training, and join the USTA as an Organization Member, their school will receive free additional class training for starting a tennis program, and discounts on equipment. For more info, contact Liz Grayston at the Utah Tennis Association, 801-944-8782 x16 or e-mail Liz. For additional information on this USTA program, please click here.

Top Reasons for School Tennis Programs:

  • "Playing tennis is an excellent way to engage kids in regular physical activity to help them live longer, healthier lives." - American Heart Association
  • Every child should have the opportunity to engage in healthy, lifelong activities in a safe and supportive environment with their peers.
  • Over 20% of children ages 6-18 are overweight, and that number has increased 200% over the past 3 decades. A recent study by the National Association for Sports & Physical Education showed that physically fit children performed better academically.
  • Tennis is one of the few sports that can be played for a lifetime and uniquely benefits children like no other sport. Through tennis kids gain both physical and psychological benefits.

  • Tennis players score higher in vigor, optimism, and self-esteem, and lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety, and tension than other athletes and non-athletes. (Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut University)

  • Tennis outperforms golf, running, weight-lifting, and many other sports in developing positive personality characteristics like sociability, mental focus, competitiveness, adventurousness, spontaneity, creativity, and assertiveness. (Dr. Jim Galvin, author of The Exercise Habit)

  • The average person burns more calories playing tennis than doing low impact aerobics, weightlifting, riding a stationary bike, hiking, walking a golf course, or playing softball, baseball, or volleyball.  (www.nutristrategy.com)
