2004 ITA David L. Freed Lifetime Service Award
Wilbur Braithwaite - Manti, Utah

On December 4, 2004, the Intermountain Tennis Association (ITA) presented Wilbur Braithwaite of Manti, Utah with the "David Freed Award".  This award was first introduced at the Intermountain level in 1988 and was given to David Freed that year.  The award is to recognize an individual for their "lifetime" service to tennis within the Intermountain Section.

Wilbur, along with many family and friends were in Denver, Colorado to receive the award.  All those in attendance were humbled by this gracious, wonderful man.

Wilbur began playing tennis in 1940 and played at the high school and collegiate level.  After receiving his Masters Degree from the University of Michigan, he returned to Manti as the coach of the basketball and tennis teams.  For over 50 years, Wilbur distinguished himself as a "coach".  His tennis teams (both boys and girls) won over 80% of their dual meets and placed in the top three at the State Championships 70% of the time.  His boys teams won the State Championship eleven times and the girls twice.  Sixty of his former players played college tennis, ten became high school or college coaches and four became teaching professionals.  Wilbur helped form the "Central Utah Little League" program in the 1950's and is primarily responsible for the 11 tennis courts that have been constructed in Manti, Utah.  He is the recipient of numerous national and local awards as a coach and a sportsman, including the Utah District "David Freed Award" in 1984.  He writes music and poetry and composed the Manti High School Fight Song.

What his players remember most about "Coach" was his dedication and unconditional love that he expressed daily to make them better men and women.  Congratulations to Mr. Wilbur Braithwaite on this well deserved award!
